Well, it has happened to me, exactly six months and three days since I purchased my XBOX 360, it crashed. It all started at the end of last week when I noticed that a game froze while playing and another game wouldn’t load a specific level. Last night I went to watch a video on the media blade and it froze while scrolling through the movies. This morning I wanted to turn the XBOX on to the marketplace so I could download the new Prey Demo and the second Top Spin Demo. The console froze while in boot up on the splash screen just before. I restarted and was able to start downloading the demos. The console stayed on for a good hour while downloading then I started playing Prey. That game played fine and then I loaded Top Spin 2. I was able to get to match point and the game froze. I turned the console off and then back on and I was presented promptly with the RED RING OF DEATH. I did everything they said to do on the Microsoft site and eventually called tech support. They instructed me to do the same things that I had already tried and then she said the console would have to be sent back for repair. And since my warranty expired on June 6th, I had to pay $139.00. I just will have to sit an wait till I can afford to get the thing repaired I suppose. When it comes to things like this, alway spring for the extended warranty.
UPDATE: Since this post in 2006, I have had a total of three consoles get red rings (my core machine twice, and my premium system once) and one console the video died, my Halo 3 Edition. You can read about them in the various links in the comments sections.

[...] I have listed over 70 action figures from my childhood on Ebay to help raise some money for the repair of the XBOX 360 that quit on us the other day. If you wish to help out the cause, the items are listed here: [...]
[...] In the continuing story of the XBOX Red Ring of Death that I experienced a couple of weeks ago, I have an update to give everyone. I did finally call Microsoft last week and paid the $129 fee to fix the box and I received the return box that will send my machine to Texas for repair. I will ship out the unit on Monday from work. I will keep you posted on the outcome. [...]
I fixed mine by hitting softly on the side because I was mad after they said I would have to pay $140.
Next time it happens, try that. It works if the machine just froze up and went to that weird screen during gameplay.
[...] The above tale paraphrases my X-Box 360 experience this weekend. Apparently I am not alone — m0thman’s tale is just as woeful. Kotaku documented his tragedy in an operatic video. The8thsign needed three X-Box 360’s to get one that worked. Not only does Microsoft have a Knowledge Base article on the red “Ring of Light”, but they even offer free repairs on 360’s manufactured in 2005 if you call 1-800-4MY-XBOX. Mine happened to be manufactured in February 2006, and would have thus required a $140 repair fee. [...]
red rings of death
Well, Its finally happened to me too, after a year or so it just quit without warning or any reasonable purpose (Ring of death). As I see it, Microsoft doesn’t deserve the 150 they want to charge me to fix the damn thing. For 400 dollars I expect something that last more than a year, and I would think a lot of other folks would too. Which is why I’ll probably get out of the next gen gaming fun, I mean it isn’t worth it if these highly expensive consoles don’t work more than one year by themselves. I wasn’t rough on the damn thing, indeed it just sat for many days, but when I finally want to use the damn thing it went kaploot.
Two times now I have had the pleasure of meeting the ring of death. First time was a year ago while playing Ghost Re con it froze I got what looked like a green checker board and then I shut it off and got the ring of death. I called and they were good at saying they would fix it for free. I sent it in and 10 weeks later I did not receive it back so I called and apparently they could not find it. So they sent me another. It worked good until I bought the new Ghost Re con it had a update I got through the first section of the training and it froze followed by the ring of death. Now I have to pay 139 to fix it. So basically I feel I just payed 139 for a update. I love the 360 but I am thinking of selling it after I get it fixed. I also think Bill gates should throw some charity to the X box 360 owners who are suffering due to these problems with the ring of death this would be a worthy cause.
Mine has done the same, but I never had this problem until three days ago when I hooked upto Xbox Live. I believe the Xbox 360 has been rushed in an attempt to beat the competition in the next gen war. I might sell all the games and accessories and buy a PS3, at least I know sony are reliable.
Me too. I feel that $300 for a console that lasts just over a year (freezes up, red ring of death) is a major rip-off and not gaming fun from Mr. Bill. I plan on going back to Sony because of the lack of reliability from Microsoft.
[...] It did it once, not a big deal, then it did it again, and again, finally bringing back the ‘Red Rings of Death’. What I did first was call the xbox hotline. They said since this was a replacement XBOX and [...]

My poor xbox has the 3 Ring of Death as of July 20,2007. I bought it in early May. Everything I have read about this only tells me that I will not be playing it anytime soon because the average person goes through 4 consoles? This is insane, we need to find a better way to let us be heard.
put a towel on it and turn your xbox on. wait ten minutes. take the towel off, and turn your xbox off and back on. it shall work.
It has happened yet again to me:

my 360 was bought april 0f 2006, used, and worked for over a year and a half before dying on 11-9-07.

my 360 got the rings of death while playing rock band with my friend online, but it just froze, so i played skate for a little bit and then it froze again, so i tried to turn it on again and the rrod came. luckily i am getting fixed for free, and i have a falcon system, so that just makes me think that microsoft just rushes everything and doesnt make their things 100% reliable. and they wont admit that the nyko intercool works, and it was a problem that they made. i love xbox, but if this happens again, ill be really mad if i have to pay a fee when the workers did a half assed job. oh well, at least i got rock band 2, so now i cant wait to play my xbox again.
That is just the reason that I have three xboxs now Paul. I also had my fourth failure recently.

Well, it has happened, yet once again, another failure. Though this time not of the Red Ring flavor, but just a complete video/audio failure.
